Why Are Dog Vaccinations So Important?

As a responsible dog owner, you undoubtedly want the best for your pooch. Dog vaccinations are a fundamental step in safeguarding your dog’s health and well-being and one of the most critical aspects of pet care is ensuring they receive the necessary jabs. Here’s why vaccinating your dog is of paramount importance:

Disease Prevention

Dog vaccinations are your hound's first line of defence against potentially life-threatening diseases. Diseases like Rabies, Hepatitis, and Parvovirus can be devasting and even fatal. Vaccinations prevent these types of diseases from taking hold of your dog's body.

Protecting Your Community

Vaccinating your dog isn’t just about their health; it’s about the health of the entire canine community. Diseases can be highly contagious and easily spread amongst unvaccinated dogs. By vaccinating your dog, you contribute to immunity, reducing the overall prevalence of these diseases.

Cost Effective

The cost of dog vaccinations is minimal compared to the expenses associated with treating a sick dog. Treatments for the types of diseases associated with unvaccinated dogs can be expensive and extensive. Vaccinations are a cost-effective way to prevent the expenditures associated with treating a poorly pooch.

Longevity

Dog vaccinations can help your pooch live a longer, healthier life, meaning fewer trips to the vet and less stress on your dog’s body. This improves the dog's quality of life and can even add years to its life expectancy.

Peace Of Mind

Knowing that your dog is protected against preventable diseases offers peace of mind for owners; taking away the worry of your dog potentially contracting a preventable disease.

How do Dog Vaccinations Work?

Dog vaccinations work by stimulating your dog’s immune system to produce an immune response against specific disease-causing agents.

Dog vaccinations contain tiny pieces or weakened versions of germs that can make your dog sick. When they receive a vaccine, their body’s immune system practices fighting these germs without making them sick. Their immune system then remembers this practice, so if the real germs ever try to invade your dog’s body, their immune system knows how to defeat them quickly.

What diseases do Dog Vaccinations Protect Against?

At Crofts Veterinary Practice, we provide dog vaccinations for the following diseases:

  • Canine Parvovirus – a virus that can survive for long periods of time and is usually fatal.
  • Canine Distemper (Hard Pad) – rare in the UK in recent years due to vaccination, this can still be fatal to dogs.
  • Infectious Hepatitis – this disease still exists in the UK but is becoming less common due to vaccinations. This is often fatal.
  • Leptospirosis – This is usually contracted from the urine of rats and/or other dogs and is often picked up from contaminated canals and rivers.
  • Kennel cough/Parainfluenza – This highly contagious disease consists of an extremely unpleasant harsh, dry cough and is usually transmitted in places where dogs gather, parks, kennels, etc. The coughing can last some weeks and complications, like pneumonia may arise.
  • Rabies Fatal Disease – This disease isn’t found in the UK but a dog vaccination is required if travelling abroad.
